How we are different

Not all minimally invasive surgery is the same

Expandable retractors and minimally invasive surgery. Unfortunately, exciting medical advancements often lead to misconceptions, which is exactly what is happening in the minimally invasive industry right now. Many doctors are claiming to perform minimally invasive surgery, and are getting away with it because of the incision size, BUT the equipment, or retractor they are using expands once inside your spine, causing as much muscle tearing and pain as open back surgery. It is really important to ask the right questions and to be educated on minimally invasive procedures when interviewing doctors.

As pioneers in minimally invasive procedures, the Minimally Invasive Spine Institute (MISI) does not use expandable retractors. Our equipment allows us to go right between the muscle, often through an incision as small as 3 mm, to avoid cutting the muscle altogether. See the difference for yourself now. Click here to watch our interview on ABC's Good Morning Texas.

Unlike other practices that only perform a certain procedure or pain management physicians who were not trained as spine surgeons, our surgeons are trained spine specialists. Each one is board certified and Fellowship Trained in spine surgery and is educated in the most innovative, state-of-the-art, minimally invasive laser technologies on the market. We also perform a comprehensive list of spine procedures tailored to each patient's specific condition and never take a one-size-fits-all approach. With the ability to treat pain with only a small laser, in many cases we are able to offer our patients day surgery with only local anesthesia and a Band-Aid® for healing, resulting in less recovery time, less, trauma, and less scarring.

Leaders in pain mapping innovations

Another difference between us and them is our innovative pain-mapping techniques. Designed to address your individual needs utilizing state-of-the-art tools, pain mapping is a groundbreaking process in which we can pinpoint and isolate the exact source and location of your pain, thus allowing us to treat only the specific area in the least invasive way possible.

When a nerve becomes irritated or inflamed, it can cause severe pain in many areas of the body. Often MRIs or CT scans are not adequate enough to find the exact nerve pain source. But at MISI, we use real time X-ray injections filled with medication to find the specific nerve causing the pain, a procedure that is highly successful and rare to find among our peers, as it must be performed by a trained physician.
